IT'S SUMMER!  IT'S PICNIC TIME!  IT'S SHOW & TELL TIME!
It's time for fun in the sun and this summer we have lot's of fun planned.  We have show & tells set up for the weekends that are fun and some are in different locations.  We are starting off with a new event in San Juan Bautista.  It's a rib cook-off.  Yummm.
The dates are Saturday, June 11th and Sunday June 12th.  Be sure to stop by if you are in the area.

On June 18th, we will be at the Campbell Highland Games.  This event is lots of fun every year especially if you love bag pipes, plaid and men in skirts.  The hours are from 9 - 5 and the location is the Campbell community center.  We even get to be in a parade.

June 25th, we will be at Pet Pals, 3660 Soquel Avenue, Soguel, California from 10 - 4.  This one is for our adopters in the Santa Cruz area.  This will be our first time so if you can stop by, it would be wonderful.

Then on July 9th & 10th, we'll be back in San Juan Bautista for the 18th annual Crafts Faire.  If you can help at any of these show & tells, please contact me.  We all know how wonderful our Greyhounds are and this is a great way to tell others what great pets they make.
Adoption Status
As for adoptions, we have been doing very well.  On May 14th, we brought in our largest group of Greys.  Fifteen Greyhounds made the trip from Oklahoma in a very fancy Greyhound hauler.  I am attaching a picture of the Greys with our wonderful volunteers and fosters who met the hauler in Santa Nella to help.  Also, this coming Friday, we will be meeting a bus full of Greyhounds coming from Kansas with six more including two seniors.  We will have pictures for the next newsletter.  This particular haul is the southern route bringing Greyhounds out to be distributed from here all the way up to Seattle, Washington.  If you would like to see the route they will be taking, go to Halfway Home Greyhounds.   "102 dogs, including 15 seniors, are scheduled to leave the Midwest. One hauler will take 35 retirees on a "northern route" to Montana, Alberta and Idaho adoption groups and the other will take 67 on a "southern route" to groups in Utah, Nevada, California, Oregon, Washington and British Columbia."  It is very exciting to be part of this huge effort.
Speedy Recovery!
We'd like to wish Casper Shofstahl a speedy recovery.  Casper did not have a good birthday this year.  He was attacked by a pit bull while on his "birthday" walk.   Jim and Carolyn report he is recovering nicely.
New Playgroup
For those of you in San Francisco, Deanna Lewis has started a Bay Area Greyhound Playgroup.  She has set up a web site.  If you would like to participate and be on her e-mail list, contact her.
Summer Reminders
A few reminders for the summer.  Don't forget about how hot the pavement can get for Greyhound paws.  If your Grey starts dancing around, get him/her to a cooler spot immediately.  Also, those of you with Black Greys, they do heat up faster.  Watch for signs of excessive panting.  The white Greys can get sunburned, so don't let them stay out in the sun too long.  A good sunscreen will help too.  Make sure your Grey has access to lots of water when it's hot.  Don't leave them in the car, better to leave your companion at home.  Also, it has been reported that grapes and raisins are not good for dogs.  They can be toxic, so be careful.  Our Greys have the same temperature tolerance that we do so if we're hot, so are they.  A wet towel can cool them down quickly.  With a little care and preparation, you can both have a wonderful and safe summer.
Fourth Annual Picnic!
And now, for the picnic.  Our fourth annual picnic will be held July 16th, 2005 at Hellyer Park in San Jose.  This year we will be bigger and better than ever.  We have more vendors including Duds4Buds and Greyt Hounds Apparel.  The shopping will be awesome.  Delene is bringing in lots of new shirts including the famous "Greyhound flag" t-shirt with our name on the back.  We have lots of new Greyhound items for your home and car.   Also, the items for each "goodie bag" are rolling in and there are some very special "goodies."  So far, the items for the silent auction include a beautiful framed Greyhound print, a "going home" poncho, a golf bag, quilts, hand made scarves, etc.  If you have an item for the silent auction, please let me know ASAP.  All donations are welcome.  Plus you get extra raffle tickets too.  Also, if you would like to be on the picnic committee, we could sure use you.  We also need people to help set up Saturday morning starting at 7 AM.   Be sure to send in your registration.  This will be a fun day for you and your Grey and a wonderful opportunity for them to be around other Greys as well.  You can see how they get along in case you were thinking about adopting another one.  Hope to see you there!
New Adoptions
We have 11 new adoptions to report.

Ellen and Mark Hubler, children Abigail and Paul, adopted Priscilla.  Priscilla goes by many names including Princess and Cilly as she is a very energetic little girl who loves to play catch with Paul.  He will quit before she will.

Pam Barker adopted Charlie (Flying Dragonfly).  Charlie is a senior and came in on the big haul from Oklahoma.  Pam reports that Charlie has fit right in with her two Greys and a Whippet.

Keith Ryden and his family have adopted Suede.  Suede is doing very well as his companion.  Keith is blind and wanted a dog to hang around with him.  At one point, Keith's daughter found that they had slept together all night on the sofa.  A "greyt" match.

Patrick Di Chiro and his Ibizan hound Mia have adopted Darcy (Beenrunningaround).  Darcy drinks water by sticking her whole face in the bowl and licking her way back out.  She and Mia are doing just fine exploring Patrick's wonderful back yard.

Joan Scott adopted Sarah (Light It Up), another senior Grey.  Sarah is a blue brindle and she and Joan and Joan's cat are doing very well together.  May was "adopt a senior" month and, thanks to Joan and Pam, we did our part.

Carolyn and Roger Henderson and daughter Rachel have adopted Zula (Golden Win).  Zula is a big beautiful female who is a tall as a male, so her name is appropriate.

Judy Smith adopted Sandy (Kiamichi ToCo).  Carol Herron, her placement rep, reports that this is a perfect match.  Judy is not a morning person and, it turns out, neither is Sandy.  They will be moving to Virginia soon.  We wish them both "greyt" luck.

Constance & Robert Oakes and daughter Lenora have adopted Katie as a companion to Bijan, their male Greyhound and Danica, their black lab.  Bijan and Katie were seen leaning on each other which is a good sign that they will do well together.

Matt Kehoe and Leann Kabella adopted Kona (MN's Joeys Kay).  Kona was a little stair challenged, so Matt had to carry her up to bed the first night.  Hopefully, she has mastered these now so Matt can save his back.

Rick and Julie Kennedy have adopted Sidestep (San Tan Sidestep).  Sidestep is a beautiful black male, one of three that came in on the Oklahoma haul.  His adopters love him so much that they want to be very active in spreading the word about Greyhounds.  Way to go Sidestep.

Steve and Becky Lincicum adopted Sheba (MI's Nicole).  After a rocky start health wise, Sheba is recovering nicely and doing very well.  Sheba has had a very rough life until now.  She definitely deserves a peaceful "retirement."

Thank you all for giving these Greyhounds a wonderful "forever home."
