March/April, 2004
Springtime!
Spring is here and the weather has turned warmer.  Flowers are in bloom.  Our Greys are outside romping more.  Does it get any better than this?
Show and Tell Season
We have started off with a bang this year.  Our first two Show & Tells in Fresno were a big success.  We did the Home and Garden Show in March and the Clovis Big Hat Day last weekend.  Jill has been busy doing home visits.  I'd like to thank Jill for all her hard work and also thank all the volunteers who came out to help.

Our next big event is the San Juan Bautista Craft Fair on April 17th & 18th.  This is  an   interesting and fun event and we have openings in all time slots.  The slots are 10 to 1, 1 - 3, and 3 - 5 both Saturday and Sunday.  Let me know if you can help.  For those of you who want to walk the show only, let me know when you can come.
News Bulletin!
In January, we will be sending out new "dog" tags for your Greyhound.  These will have their new Greyhound Adoption California ID number and where to call if they are found.  If we do not have your current address, please let us know as soon as possible.

Event Roundup
Show & Tell season starts with the Fresno Home Show March 5 – 7.  Jill still needs help on Sunday, so let her know if you’re available. This is a fun Show & Tell.  Last year, people were lined up to talk to us and we had lots of fun.

If any of you are interested in setting up a Show & Tell at your local pet store or any other venue, let me know and I can help you with the fliers and information that you will need.  It’s fun to show off your Greyhound and to talk to people about how wonderful he/she is.

Our next Show & Tell is the San Juan Bautista Craft Fair, April 17 and 18.  That same weekend, we have been invited to participate in the Western State Police K-9 Championships at Golden Gate Fields.  Be sure to mark your calendars.
Calling All Volunteers!
2004 has started out to be quite a busy year for  GPA-NorCal/ Greyhound Adoption California, with well over dozen adoptions since Christmas.  Normally, the first few months of the year are pretty quiet, until we get rolling with the Show and Tells, in the spring and summer.

With so much "business", our need for volunteers is increasing.  Volunteer activities include staffing the booth at Show & Tells, fostering new Greyhounds, driving or riding "shotgun" on transports, being on the Picnic Planning Committee and Fundraising.  Ideas are also welcome.   Let us know if you are interested in volunteering for any of these events. And, milage and expenses are tax deductable.
New Adoptions
We have placed an even dozen retired racing Greyhounds in new "forever homes."

Matthew & Karen Findling adopted Huey (Comet).  We are very proud of Huey.  As Comet, he had some trouble adjusting to life off the track.  His fosters, the  Knightons,  worked with him and Matthew & Karen report he is doing beautifully.

Ron Petersen adopted Savvy (Cupid).  Ron lives in Oregon and connected with us through Jack Fishbaugh in Modesto.  Savvy goes to work with Ron, who is a hospital administrator.  She has learned which patients have treats waiting for her and she makes her rounds every day spreading Greyhound cheer.

Jeannie Jarnot & Carlos Paz adopted Cornell.  Cornell is doing fine and is even learning, after much prodding by his fosters, the Denegri's, to deal with stairs.

Lisa & John Bono adopted Luna (Mountain Dew).  After a big reception, Luna settled in with her new "family."  She received lots of toys and treats from her "parents" friends and neighbors.  She is on her way to becoming the princess she deserves to be.

Patrick Friel & Amy Rubin adopted Courtney.  Courtney also had to learn to deal with stairs and is doing very well.   They love taking her to the dog park.

Janet Singer added Tina to her family that includes her other Greyhound, Dixie.  Tina is a tiny little blue with a big growl.  She and Dixie are fast friends and doing beautifully.

Joe & Veronica McGlynn and their son Kolya adopted Cotton.  His new name is Harry Cottonball after Kolya's favorite story.  He joins their other two Greyhounds, the stately Fellini and the pretty little Guilietta.

Peter & Ann Richards and their two daughters, Tissa and Vivi adopted two of our Greys.  First they adopted Peanut (Precious).   All went well and then they found out that Emilio, who came up with Precious, was available and adopted him.  His new name is Snert.  Reports are that they are both doing very well.

Tom & Pat Baxes contacted us to let us know that Bubba Nomad was coming off the track.  He is a litter mate of Polly, their female Greyhound.  Bubba is doing fine with his sister and is a real sweetheart.

Bill Lapcevic adopted Spalding (Big Jim Cool).  Spalding is a big white male who is loving his new life.  He just needs to learn that there will be another meal coming.  Bill saw Spalding on our web site and was very excited when he found out he was adopting him.

Thank you all for giving a Greyhound a wonderful new home.   Also, thank you to all the fosters of this group:  Dick & Delene Dunne, Nina & Steve Denegri, Tobreth & Jason Hansen, Jim & Petree Knighton,  Sherrlyn & Tom Lancaster,  Paul & Christy Lucero, Jim & Carolyn Shofstahl, and Kathy & Louis Vasquez.   We could not do this without you.

If any of you are interested in fostering, please contact Sherrlyn Lancaster. We can always use more fosters and it is very rewarding.  It is usually a two week commitment.  The Tucson dogs have been very easy to housebreak and are adjusting to home life very quickly.   We are constantly bringing in dogs so let us know if this is something you'd like to do.
