Dog Days!
IT'S AUGUST ALREADY! The "DOG DAYS OF SUMMER" are winding down. We
have a respite from Show & Tells so we can gather out strength for the
Fall. In September, we start all over again.
Event Round-Up!
First is the First Wednesday Street Party in Pleasanton. The hours are 6 - 9 PM. Contact Jim & Carolyn Shofstahl if you'd like more information.

We have been invited to participate in the first annual Rose Garden Parade on September 13th. This should be a fun event as we can dress up our Greys and show them off as they parade around Lincoln High School in San Jose. Sherrlyn Lancaster is the contact and will be sending out more information as we get closer to the event.

The next weekend in September is the one that we are really going to need all of you to help out with. The 19th, 20th and 21st of Sept. is the Pet Expo in Pleasanton at the fair grounds. The 20th and 21st is the Downtown Pleasanton Art Craft & BBQ Fest. These two events are VERY IMPORTANT as they are excellent venues for getting the word out about our wonderful Greys. Please contact me, Ann Sanders, if you can help and for more information.

And last but not least, Sept. 21st is GREYHOUND PLANET DAY. For Greyhound Planet Day, you all need to go to your local Petco and sign up our organization, Greyhound Adoption California, so that we will get the money they collect. This is very worthwhile and can bring in lots of donations for us. What Petco does is ask every customer if they'd like to "round up" their purchase to the next dollar for Greyhound rescue. Also, we are allowed to have a money jar for straight donations. Petco will also allow us to display our flyers. If you'd like to do this, please contact me and I can e-mail you the flier and answer any questions you may have. We made over $200 last year.

Human Race Update
This was the first year that our organization participated in the Human Race. We are pleased to announce that we netted over $500. Thank you Jennifer Morales for signing us up for this event. I know that we will do even better next year.
New Email Address!
Announcement - the organization's e-mail is changing from GPA-NorCal_GACA@attbi.com to GPA-NorCal_GACA@comcast.net. Please change your records. Thank you.
New Adoptions
We had lots of adoptions this month. We brought six Greyhounds up directly from the track with help from GPA-OC/GLA. We also brought up two others from their foster program.

Judy Young and Jerry Cellilo and their daughter Sandy adopted Jenna (Piccolo). At least I think Jenna is her name. They have been having fun deciding what the final name will be.

Adrianne Vincent and Marge Poscher adopted Kohl. Kohl taught himself how to get out of the pool when he fell in. He lost his balance trying to get a drink of water. I'm sure he was thinking "Wow, that's one BIG water bowl!" Fortunately all ended well.

Teresa Soderlund and her family adopted J.C. Penny as a companion for their first Greyhound, Marti. They are getting along beautifully.

Dan & Jen Miller adopted Arwen (Bloomingdales) as a companion for their first Greyhound, Cash. Ari and Cash are "in love with each other" and Cash is coming out of his shell and has become much more active.

Carolyn & Roger Henderson and their daughter Rachel adopted Marshall. Reports are that Marshall is in love with looking at himself in mirrors and a perfect gentleman.

And last but not least, Jack Fishbaugh has adopted Emma. Emma is a 5 1/2 year old little girl who was featured on the cover of GPA-OC/GLA's newsletter, "The Couch Potato."

To all of you, a huge THANK YOU for giving a retired racing Greyhound a wonderful FOREVER HOME.

Places to go and things to do!
Jennifer Morales would like to remind you to send in your pictures for the web site. Also, she is compiling a list of "dog friendly" places for you to go with your Greyhound. Lots of restaurants have outdoor patios and will let you bring your dog. Be sure to call first and ask if it is OK. If you know of any places like this, Jennifer would like to hear about it.
Doggie Health Reminder
Jill Mazzei asked me to share with you her recent experience with her Sheltie mix, Scamp:

We recently discovered a lump on the neck of our Sheltie mix. Scamp is 11 years and having older dogs previously, we believed it was just one of the fatty old age doggy tumors of our familiarity. Since Scampy was due for his dental anyway, we asked our vet to remove the tumor since it was in his collar region, and for insurance send for the histology report. BOY! are we glad. The tumor came back malignant. It was a slow growing nerve sheath malignancy. The key to treatment is getting wide margins of healthy tissue surrounding the tumor when removing. If wide margins cannot be obtained, radiation is recommended. This cancer does not metastasize and has re-occurrence in the excised area if wide margins are unobtainable. Scamp's prognosis is great. We just need to watch the neck area for re-occurrence, but no radiation was indicated. DO NOT dismiss those old age lumps and bumps (as I was first inclined). While Scamp is not a greyhound, our experience is a good wake up call for all dog owners. While you may pay more in vet fees now, consider the expense an insurance premium for re-assurance of your pet's good health. It's always easier to deal with something, when you know what the "something" is. Okay that's a dangling participle.....but you get the point....

Thank you Jill for pointing this out. Two of the Greyhounds we recently brought up had cysts. We had them drained immediately to make sure it wasn't anything serious.

Congratulations!
A big CONGRATULATIONS goes out to Cali Lancaster. Cali won "Best Rescue" at the Pooch Pow Wow. WAY TO GO! Her brother, Gromit, placed fourth in "Best Looking Male." Sherrlyn & Tom are very proud and so are we. This was a fun event and we look forward to next year.
Nominate Your Park!
We are continuing to work on finding a site for our second annual Greyhound Adoption California picnic. If any of you who live in the Bay Area have suggestions for a location, please contact Jennifer Morales. We are already collecting lots of Greyhound Goodies to sell and, of course we'll have the 2004 Calendars.
You Say It's Your Birthday!
We'd like to wish all the August babies a VERY HAPPY BIRTHDAY: Carly, Periwinkle, Rayo, Elle, Je T'aime, Phoebe B. , Sasha, Kaliegh, Ferrah, Fiona, Rocky Raccoon, Jack, Taffy, Cora, Tigi, Penney, and Kohl.
Here's wishing you lots of treats and squeaky stuffies.
Different Kinds of Greys!
Carol Stovers sent the following for your enjoyment:

Greyssette Hounds: Beautiful, sleek racing dogs with one small problem: 4 inch high legs. They run _really_ fast, they just don't _move_ very fast.

Greysloths: They spend their days laying around upside down not moving. Wait, we already have those...

Greyotes: You think rooing is a problem now?

Greyt Elk: Happy Tails: a problem. Happy Antlers: a _real_ problem.

Greypanzees: With an opposable thumb, the Doorknob Problem is well on it's way to be solved.

Greylphins: Finally, a pet that doesn't mind going out in the rain.

Greycodiles: Let's just say that Australia's favorite export TV show has been unexpectedly cancelled.

Greyza Minnelli: Even thicker black rings around the eyes. Also, tends not to stay with any given Alpha more than a few months.

Clint Greystwood: Go ahead. Give me a treat.

Arnold Greyzenagger: I'll be bark.

Jay Greyno: At last, a chin that sticks out as far as the nose.

David Greyterman: Drives even faster on the Connecticut Turnpike

Looking forward to hearing from lots of you that you will be able to help with the September Show & Tells. Meanwhile stay cool and enjoy what's left of the summer with your Greys.
