April 2003

HELLO GREYHOUND LOVERS!  SPRING IS HERE!

We have lots to talk about this month as we begin our Show & Tell season.  First of all, our new web site is up.  Jennifer Morales is our web master and we think she has done an excellent job.  She is still working on the photo section and it will be well worth waiting for.  If you have any pictures that you think would look good, please send them to Jennifer.  Her e-mail is jen@jenorama.org.  Or, you can contact me at GPA-NorCal_GACA@attbi.com. Also, we would like the new web site to be as informative as possible.  The newsletter will be posted each month.  Also, upcoming events.  If you have any suggestions or ideas or events that you think should be included, please send them to Jennifer or me.  We definitely want your input.

Our next Show & Tell is the San Juan Bautista Craft Fair.  This is the first "craft fair" of the season and the turn out is usually huge.  Be sure to contact me asap if you are interested in participating.  As we did last year, the "shifts" will be no more than three hours each.  For new adopters who have never done this, it is a wonderful way to tell the world about your Greyhound and to promote Greyhound adoption.  We need people to work the booth and "walkers."  The "walkers" job is to walk around the craft fair and hand out fliers and be ready to give information to anyone who stops you.  You just have to try not to block either the walk way or any of the crafter's booths.  It is definitely a fun thing to do.

Join the Human Race!

Don't forget we have a new event that Jennifer Morales is in charge of.  We are joining the 10th Annual Human Race on May 10th at Shoreline Park in Mountain View.  This is a "premier community fundraising event providing all non-profit organizations the opportunity to raise money for their programs and services."  It consists of a USA Track & Field certified 10K and 5K run and a 5K Pledge Walk.  Registration is $5 for the "walk" and $20 for the 10K & 5K runs.  We hope to have a booth and lots of people participating and pledging.   Deadline for pre-registration is April 27th.  So contact Jennifer immediately at jen@jenorama.org or 408-896-7236.

Petco Pet Adoption Promotion

May 3rd and 4th is the Petco Pet Adoption promotion.  Many of you who are not going to the GPA/Orange County Picnic have expressed interest in doing a Show & Tell at your nearest Petco.  If you are interested, please contact me for fliers and information.  Also, DON'T FORGET TO CONTACT THE PETCO TO LET THEM KNOW YOU ARE COMING.  They will have other organizations participating and we want to make sure there will be no conflict.

GPA Orange County Picnic
There is still time to get room reservations and sign up for the GPA/Orange County Picnic.  Again, here is the information:
Residence Inn La Mirada - Buena Park
14419 Firestone Boulevard
La Mirada, CA 90638
Phone: 714-523-2800
Fax: 714-522-5884
They are very dog friendly and this is the closest to the park. We are hoping to get together with all of you who are coming the night before the picnic.

Here is the information on the picnic itself from the GPA Fast Friends web site:
New Location! Mark your calendars now and spend a fun filled day with your greyhounds in La Habra Heights park, surrounded by fellow greyhound people. Located off Hacienda Blvd, just north of East Road at 1885 N Hacienda Blvd. This place is just exactly what we have been looking for. Every problem we have had in the past has been taken care of. The 2003 8th Annual Picnic will be on Saturday, May 3rd from 10am-4pm. Traveling south on Hacienda Blvd is a country drive, full of twists and turns. For this reason we do recommend approaching the park from the south (thus driving north on Hacienda Blvd). Visit Mapquest for the map to the park.

We can't say enough about how much fun this picnic is.  There are usually at least several hundred Greyhounds and their adopters.  Games, shopping, good food and camaraderie.  The number of vendors is impressive. It is well worth the trip.  If you are planning to adopt at the picnic, you need to get pre-approved.  Be sure to let me know so I can get your paperwork in.  Make your reservations now before the good rooms are all gone.  Hope to see lots of you there.

Upcoming Events!
The Campbell Mardi Gras, May 17th & 18th.
The Pleasanton Heritage Festival, June 7th & 8th.
Five Greyhounds went to their new "forever homes."

Janet Singer and her son Zachary have adopted Taiko.  Zachary is a typical 17 year old who loves to sleep.  Taiko decided it was time for him to get up and went into his room, got in his face and barked...loudly.  Zachary flew out of bed, he got up...

Sally & Tao Chang have adopted Bongo.  Their phone message now reads "You have reached Sally, Tao and our new addition, BONGO!

Thomas  &  Kathleen Carr adopted Clarinet.  Clarinet is a little shy and is still approaching them from the rear.  Hopefully, she will do a turn around soon.

Donnie and Donna Heiny adopted Jake.  Jake is a Greyhound rescued from the local animal shelter.  He is now the brother to Piper, the wonder Greyhound.

Dee Marley adopted Teddy.  Teddy originally came from Virginia and was in desperate need of a home.  Dee heard about him and immediately gave him a home.  Teddy goes to day care with Dee and is loving his new life.

Happy Birthday to our April Greyhounds:
Ana, Tickle Bee, Cali (Lancaster), Theodore, Isis, Marcus, Shadow, Max, Piper, Cheyenne, Chloe, Lincoln, Petunia, Richmond, Lady, Mina Loy and Bongo.   May the Easter Bunny bring you all lots of goodies.
Special Birthday!
There is one special birthday I would like to acknowledge.  Jack Fishbaugh, our Chairman and Founder, has a big birthday this year.  Jack turned 80 at the beginning of the month.  Jack's take on turning 80:  " I felt nothing at sixty and little at seventy, but this eighty business has caught my attention."  Well, it caught ours too and I only hope the rest of us are as vibrant and energetic at 80.  HAPPY BIRTHDAY JACK!
Fosters!
We are still looking for more fosters.  Please consider fostering.  It's very rewarding.
In Closing....
Have a very Happy Easter and remember, Greyhounds love to chase bunnies and chocolate is bad.
